This week’s tribute to Virginia “Virgie” Alexander, in the annual Cultural Icon Series by the Cultural Development Foundation (CDF), is most deserving. Julienne Virginia Alexander not only dedicated her life to dance but was committed to its thriving and survival. The Cultural Icon Series, conceptualised as an inspirational project, whose aim is to pay tribute to outstanding Saint Lucian artists, and share their histories, stories, experiences and work is scheduled for May 1st at the National Cultural Centre starting at 7:30 p.m.
According to the notes at an exhibition at Blue Coral Mall that twins with the Cultural Icon Series tribute, Ms. Alexander moved from dancer to mentor and teacher to Cultural activist to being recognized and honoured for her contribution to culture and arts. And that contribution is tremendous – as a dancer she was tutored by Rex Nettleford of the (NDTC) National Dance Theatre Company of Jamaica and Martha Graham, doyen of the modern dance movement in the USA and both giants themselves in moulding thousands of dancers the world over. But Virgie will be remembered not only for what she achieved for herself but a legacy that has generations of Saint Lucian dancers moving on her shoulders whether they remained at home or moved on to other countries. The list is long.
