Business of the Arts is a fully-funded programme which targets entrepreneurs within creative industries, and is designed to equip its beneficiaries with capacities in business and entrepreneurship.
The programme aims to help its beneficiaries improve their products and services by offering a greater understanding of key business concepts, such as management, marketing, finance, digital literacy, and business plan development.
Targeted groups for this programme include: Artists, Musicians, Singers, Actors, Dancers, Curators, Crafters, Agents, Managers, etc.
The Business of the Arts programme is a collaboration between the Cultural Development Foundation (CDF) and SALCC, funded by the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) and Basic Needs Trust Fund (BNTF) through the Saint Lucia Social Development Fund (SSDF).
Learning Outcomes
- Increased entrepreneurship knowledge and skills.
- Improved social networking with relevant industry partners.
- Increased capacity to develop existing products and services.
- A pathway to an Associate Degree in Creative and Performing Arts and Creative Industries and Events Management at SALCC, through the transfer credits and exemptions of courses.
PROGRAMME STRUCTURE
Business of the Arts runs over a 12-month period — September 2023 to August 2024 — and consists of core hybrid courses facilitated by industry experts in key areas;
Business of the Arts will be delivered using a hybrid approach — a combination of both the online and face-to-face learning experience.
* All beneficiaries must complete a minimum of four modules to qualify as having completed this programme.

Fundamentals of Reading and Writing
Elementary Mathematics
LEVEL ONE
Trends and Opportunities in the Creative Sector
In this course, participants will develop an appreciation for and understanding of the range and developmental trends of the Creative Industries. They will then be able to be sufficiently knowledgeable and empowered to chart their contributions to the Creative Industries locally, regionally, and internationally.
Introduction to Creative Entrepreneurship
This course is designed to develop the entrepreneurial skills and knowledge of the participants. They will be exposed to the best methods to formulate innovative ideas and identify opportunities to materialize successful creative products and businesses.
Managing Creative Businesses
Participants will analyse the functions of management in relation to creative businesses and projects. They will also examine leadership and management approaches that can be utilized to create a professional working environment.
LEVEL TWO
Financing Fundamentals for the Creative Business
The aim of this course is to provide a practical understanding of the steps, concepts and processes applied over the accounting cycle. This will include the preparation and analysis of financial statements and different types of budgets.
Creative Industries and Digital Media
This course will focus on participants’ digital literacy, and the significance and implications of such knowledge and skills to success in the Creative Industries. Participants will also develop their digital skills to better utilize social media platforms.
Marketing Goods and Services in the Creative Sector
This course will provide an orientation on the fundamentals of Marketing. It will allow participants to engage in market research, and develop strategies relevant to their creative products and businesses.
The Creative Business Plan
This course is designed to guide participants in the process of creating a business proposal for their Creative businesses and ideas. Participants will take part in an entrepreneurship showcase to provide practical experience in showcasing their products and businesses.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
- Beneficiaries must have at least three (3) years of experience in the service.
- Beneficiaries must have at least one product or service relative to the creative sector already developed.
- Beneficiaries must be registered artistes or cultural practitioners — they should have been already registered with the CDF Cultural Database, or with the Department of Culture and Creative Industries.
- Trainees will be required to accede to and sign an agreement to demonstrate their commitment to the project.
- Trainees will also be required to accede to post-training monitoring and the provision of information to compile tracer study reports.
