LITERARY HIGHLIGHT: Celebrating Our People – “Endless Night” by A. L. Dawn French

ENDLESS NIGHT by A. L. Dawn French

12:30am

“Lord I’m gonna burst, you think I should wake them up? I need to go to the bathroom. I suppose I could wet the bed. But that would still wake everyone. Oh, what the heck.”

“Wake up!” Bladder yelled.

The sounds of moans and groans greeted her.

“What is it Bladder?” Brain asked.

“We need to go to the bath” Bladder explained.

“Now?” Legs demanded, “We were just getting a rest”.

“Now” Bladder said.

“Oh, alright” Legs said. “Let’s go before you wet the bed”.

“And that would be more trouble” Nerves said.

2:15am

“Throat”, Stomach whispered, “Throat”.

No reply.

“Throat”, Stomach called a little louder.

“What?”

“You awake?”

“No”.

“Throat”, Stomach smiled and said, “the food is not breaking down, we need to send it back”.

“Are you crazy! It’s two in the morning”.

“Hey, a girl gotta do what a girl’s gotta do”. Stomach apologized.

“Will you two keep quiet”, Nerves demanded. “You’re waking every part up!”

“Good” Stomach replied “we have to go again”.

“Again” Stomach replied.

4:30am

“Nerves” Throat whispered “inform Brain that I’m hurt”.

“So you hurt, big deal” Nerves replied. “Night is for sleeping but with the way you parts have been behaving you’d think it was broad daylight”.

Nostrils flared, “Nerves, we have been bugged. We are facing an invasion of a flu. Stop gossiping and go inform Brain”.

“Yes ma’am” Nerves replied sarcastically.

On receiving the news, Brain reacted.

“Attention!” Brain barked. Sounds of the protest greeted her.

“Quiet” she demanded and received the desired effect.  “Red alert, we are facing a Flu invasion”.

“A what?” Heart complained.

“A Flu invasion” Brain confirmed “So we are now under battled conditions, be ready for active duty. That’s all”.

5:40am

“Oh my Gawwwd!” Every nerve in the body strained.

“What was the” Heart boomed.

“That” panted Abdomen “was a period pain”.

“A month already?” Heart replied “I can’t take such shock treatment”.

“Well it can’t be helped” Abdomen replied through the system.

“Lord help me” Nerves prayed.

7:00am

“Wake up!” Brain cried.

“Again, what is going on!” Nerves complained. “Wake up, then sleep, wake up the sleep – it’s killing me”.

“Time to wake up, it’s morning. We have to get to work”.

“That time already?” Legs groaned.

“What a night” Eyes stated, “I barely got any sleep, I’m so tired”.

“You’re not the only one” Legs sympathized.

“Chill out” Brain interrupted “and move!”

“Oh, I ache” Head throbbed.

“That’s the Flu” Throat whispered.

“So now we face the world feeling lousy and they expect us to do our best”. Eyes flashed “Ooh, I hurt”.

“Ah choo!” some part replied.
