Mexico-Saint Lucia Heritage Management Workshop

Saint Lucia and the United Mexican States approved the First Technical and Scientific Cooperation Program on October 26th, 2021.  A project entitled Heritage management to promote national identity, creation of new tourism experiences and reduce unemployment is one of the projects initiated in this program.  The general objective of the project is to sustainably manage Saint Lucia’s heritage assets and their contribution to national and community development, job creation, new sustainable livelihood opportunities and diversification of the tourism product.  This project will provide an opportunity for Saint Lucian counterparts to gain from the wealth of knowledge and experience of cooperating Mexican Institutions namely the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas (CONANP) and the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH).

The first activities, expected to take place during the months of February, March and April 2022 are virtual workshops targeted at institutions and persons who have a profession or experience related to the Management of Cultural Heritage. Below is an outline of the objectives, requirements contents and benefits of the workshop and the planned calendar of activities.

OBJECTIVE:

To publicize the main course of action, in terms of handling and managing the integral conservation of cultural heritage in Saint Lucia.

REQUIREMENTS FOR PARTICIPANTS AND SESSION:

Have a profession or experience related to the Management of Cultural Heritage, to be able to analyze and develop future courses of action which are presented in the workshop. The review of bibliographic material is recommended, which is basic to analyze any management system that is seen during the development of the activities.

To carry out the workshop in the best way possible, a simultaneous Spanish-English-Spanish translation will be available for the sessions. Since the sessions will be carried out virtually, it is necessary to have a platform that allows them to be executed in the scheduled time.

SERVICE TO IMPROVE:

Participants will have the basic and fundamental knowledge to understand the main idea of managing cultural heritage, which will allow for the development of pertinent strategies in their field and to fully comply with the functions established in the collaboration agreement between the United Mexican States and Saint Lucia.

ATTITUDES TO DEVELOP:

Participants of this course will have the ability to develop conducive proposals and participate in the development and execution of the collaboration agreement between the United Mexican States and Saint Lucia.

SKILLS TO DEVELOP:

The participant will have knowledge of the main normative instruments and management systems, which are currently executed in the INAH, who has custody of this heritage.

BENEFITS FOR THE PARTICIPANT:

The participant will have knowledge of the tasks of the INAH including management strategies and will be able to participate, make proposals, and develop actions that promote the integral conservation of the Mexican archaeological heritage with a projection of application in the Saint Lucian heritage.

Due to sanitary conditions, the workshop will be held virtually. Feedback on the topics can be done through the saved sessions and subsequent consultations with each unit.

Digital platform 02-03-2022 3 GIS and Geomatics-Risk Control The usefulness of Geographic Information Systems to georeference heritage, as well as to map the factors that can benefit or affect heritage.
Digital platform 09-03-2022 3 Management plans/research, conservation, dissemination, protection and administration Preparation of management plans with the axis of the substantive tasks of the INAH as the core of the content. Rows and specialized activities are detached and linked from these.
