Musicians honour a maestro

His work includes musical arrangements for Lord Jackson, Herb Black, Lucian Parrot, Invader, Pelay, T.C. Brown and many others and throughout his career, Piper has also collaborated with a number of international musicians/arrangers including Frankie McIntosh, Kenrick Georges, Nicolas Brancker, and Arthur De Coteau.

Gregory Cassius Piper began playing the tenor and double tenor steel pans as a youth and was a member of the Diamond Steel Orchestra for many years. His very first lesson in music theory was taught by Saint Lucia’s Ms. Joyce Auguste.  In 1969 he joined the Royal St. Lucia Police Band where Carlos Mynns saw much promise in young Piper and drafted him to transcribe melodies which Charles Cadet was working on.

Years of tutelage from Carlos Mynns and Rudolph “Toto” Charles equipped Piper with the skill and knowledge to arrange a wide variety of music including fanfares, military matches, calypso, soca, classical music, chorale music, including for concert bands and small orchestras. cadet poster sm lo res

In 2006, Gregory C. Piper became the Director of Music of the Royal St. Lucia Police Band and was key in the band’s release of its first album, ‘Caribbean Royalty’, which features classical pieces and local folk favorites.  His own album ‘Piper, The Album’ has been dubbed “a masterpiece” by many.

In 2010, Piper was appointed musical director of the Charles Cadet Youth Orchestra, the brainchild of Petronella Deterville and has taught wind instruments at the Marigot, Gros Islet and St. Mary’s College Secondary Schools.

In addition, Piper serves is Musical Director of the Rotary Calabashers; a group of professionals who dedicate their love, time and energy to charitable causes in Saint Lucia.

As one of Saint Lucia’s leading musical arrangers, Gregory serves as musical director for “The Cadet Concert” on Sunday May 3rd.
