Castries, October 6th, 2020 – In observance of The Republic of China (Taiwan) (ROTC) National Day Celebrations, the Cultural Development Foundation (CDF) in collaboration with the Embassy of Taiwan reinforces its friendly relation with Saint Lucia by featuring a “Best of the Best Lantern Competition” amongst twelve (12) selected winners and facilitators of the annual Lantern competition organized and produced by the CDF. The competition is scheduled for October 8th, 2020 at the Sandals Golf and Country Club in Cap-Estate at a private ceremony organized by the Embassy of Taiwan in Saint Lucia.

The Theme for the competition is “2020- Proud of Taiwan and Saint Lucia”.  The diplomatic relations between the two countries spans from 1984 to present. Saint Lucia has enjoyed mutual relation with the (ROTC) with many Saint Lucians being beneficiaries in education, agriculture, community projects and more recently, supplies to assist with COVID-19 pandemic to name a few.

The CDF is very pleased to join in celebrating with the Embassy of Taiwan.  The artists were elated and jumped at the opportunity to display their talent to people who are all too familiar with excellence in lantern making.  The artistes’ excitement grew when lantern size was discussed and opted to create bigger and more creative lanterns for this competition.

According to the Executive Director of the CDF Raymona Henry-Wynne, “it is an opportunity that has the potential to grow beyond the ROTC’s National Day Celebrations, traditionally as a people we had grown accustomed to lantern displays only at Christmas.  The CDF team always lamented that lanterns had a place outside of the traditional season and platforms can be provided to display creativity.  Lantern displays would be useful at events such as ARC Race, at Cruise Ports and Airports, craft shops and prominent spaces and places.  Whilst the Embassy gets the opportunity to celebrate ROTC’s National Day, Saint Lucia gets to share its culture, traditions and talent.

A small team of CDF staff have come together to coordinate their efforts in ensuring a successful event that Saint Lucians can be proud of.

The Cultural Development Foundation, Government and people of Saint Lucia wish the Government and people of the Republic of China (Taiwan) a Happy National Day on October 10th, 2020.
