What do you get when the head of law enforcement, the leader of the legislative arm of government, Education officials, corporate St. Lucia, parents and community members converge at a primary school on the same day, books in hand with eager students and teachers anxiously anticipating the arrival of their specially invited guests? Well…what was in store for attendees at the La Guerre Combined School on Friday June 6th, was a Reading Extravaganza!
The bright smiles on the faces of the guests as well as the hosts was a clear sign that this was going to be no ordinary Friday at school. Students at all grade levels were read to by the guests who encouraged them to focus on their studies as this would be vital in their journey towards becoming their very best. In addition to reading to the students, invitees made book and cash donations towards the class libraries.
Principal of the La Guerre Combined School, Therese Inglis-Johnny in explaining how the activity which has been done twice before said, “We want the students to be motivated by the presence of outstanding people, parents and anyone who will encourage them to read.”
Guests included President of the Senate, Claudius Francis, Commissioner of Police, Vernon Francois, Inspector Ronald Phillip from the Babonneau Police Station, Attorney at Law, Isa Cyril, representatives from Rendezvous Hotel, Project Engineer, Wendel Bernard, Ministry of Education representative, Cyrilla Lewis and CDF representative, Medalise Breen.
The warm reception, attentive gazes and animated interaction between the students and guests, coupled with the freshly picked coconuts served after the reading sessions all encourage an acceptance for the next invitation which promises to come soon.
