The exuberant sound of the steel and metal from the streets to the pan yards from Gros Islet to Laborie; 7 junior pan-sides will converge on the grounds of the national Cultural Centre to battle with melody, rhythm and style!
The Cultural Development Foundation as part of “Artreach” The National Arts Festival is excited to present the 2014 Junior Panorama Competition. On Sunday, March 30, 2014 the grounds of the National Cultural Centre will from 3:00 pm wake up and shake with the enthusiasm and anticipation of hundreds of young panists beating out the sweet sound of steel pan music in an atmosphere of fierce but friendly rivalry filling the skies and rocking the grounds with the unmistakable sounds sensation of the steel pan.
Steel pan music surfaced in Saint Lucia in 1945 and since then the sound of the steel drum as become an integral part of our culture. The pan represents the voice of the Caribbean Diaspora, a people moving to the beat own drum of steel – their own identity and their own music.
The young ‘pan sides’ in Junior Panorama will test and excite the judges’ palates with their own interpretations and arrangements of some of St. Lucia’s most popular calypso and soca numbers, beating pan to send their supporters into a steel pan frenzy.
In a true reflection of national participation, bands will hail from a wide cross section of St. Lucia including Micoud, Marigot/Anse la Raye, Castries, Balata/Babonneau and Laborie all eagerly looking to dethrone the 2013 champions, Pantime Steel Orchestra of Gros Islet.
Junior Panorama continues to highlight the CDF’s commitment to socially develop and train young persons while assuring the conservation and growth of the steel pan art form.
So come out and support in large numbers, enjoy the irrepressible beat of the pan and help inspire St. Lucia’s youth panists to ensure we can all enjoy beautiful steel pan music for the future.
