Cultural Development Foundation Launches Artistic Renaissance Sculpting Project Through Intercultural Exchange (Spotlight Taiwan)

PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Castries, September 30, 2024– The Cultural Development Foundation (CDF) is proud to announce the launch of Artistic Renaissance: Rebirth of Humanism, Perspective, and Depth in Art, a pioneering project aimed at training aspiring and practising sculptors in Saint Lucia. This initiative will foster creativity and professional growth through an intercultural exchange between Saint Lucia and the Republic of China (Taiwan), further deepening the cultural and artistic bonds between the two nations.
Saint Lucia’s public sculptures have long reflected the island’s rich history, culture, and innate beauty. Two prominent sculptors, Ricky George and Jallim Eudovic, created some of the most iconic statues around the island, whose works have earned international acclaim and accolades. Their creations, seen locally and internationally, tell stories of the island’s people, landscapes, and artistic soul.
The lineage of Saint Lucian sculpting is deeply rooted in tradition, with another key figure, Vincent Joseph Eudovic, being the most prominent name in wood carving. Eudovic, the father of Jallim Eudovic, has dedicated decades to sculpting with local woods, such as Laurier Canelle, Mahogany, and Cedar, crafting unique, abstract works that reflect Saint Lucia’s natural beauty and cultural heritage.
This training workshop, in collaboration with Taiwanese sculptor Tsai, Min-Han, seeks to rejuvenate the art of sculpting among the younger generation. Min-Han, born in Kaohsiung, draws inspiration from the rich Taiwanese culture and embodies a distinct Asian humanism. Using a vibrant artistic vocabulary, he has developed a Taiwanese style. His solo exhibition “To Have and Have Not” at the 2017 Venice Biennale stunned the international community, showcasing the power of Taiwanese art to the world. His works demonstrate how art transcends boundaries and how sculpture can serve as a bridge between communities, cultures, and ideas. https://nspp.mofa.gov.tw/
Overall, the CDF’s Artistic Renaissance project aims to transfer essential sculpting techniques to a new generation of Saint Lucians, fostering not only artistic excellence but also contributing to participants’ development of physical, cognitive, and social skills. Through hands-on workshops and collaborative learning, participants will explore new techniques, deepen their skills, and gain fresh perspectives in their artistic expressions.
The culmination of the workshop will be celebrated through a public exhibition- Taiwan/Saint Lucia Trade Show 2024 and the Saint Lucia Jazz and Arts Festival 2025 – “Art and The City” component. Both the work of the Taiwanese facilitator and the participants will be displayed. This event will serve as a platform to showcase the talents nurtured through the program, bringing attention to the profound potential of Saint Lucian sculptors on the global stage.
