Street Art, Urban Cultures and Identity

The following communiqué is from the Alliance Française, located at Pointe Seraphine in Castries.

This month, Alliance Française proposes several events and activities under the theme “Street Art, Urban cultures and Identity”.

This Saturday, you are invited to a show of hip hop and samba and to participate to a hip hip workshop!

HIP HOP AND SAMBA SHOW

With David Milôme and Chantal Thine, professional dancers and choreographers.

Samba and Hip Hop – two grassroots arts, carriers of social demands and allowing the emancipation of several generations. A journey which seems to be similar: from street to notoriety.

From traditional Afro-religious roots to the urban sensuality of Rio, Samba is a profoundly mixed art full of varied music and dances, poetry describing exile, social stakes but also love.

To transcend its sufferings with joy, bearer of hope, the Samba, National emblem of Brazil, brings together in the space of moments of life every layer of society.
In another context, the Hip Hop, originating from the black and Latino ghettos of New York, is spreading rapidly throughout the world. More than an opposition movement, it is a way of being, of thinking. It is an art of living, a state of mind. A way to “challenge life through artistic creation”, or whether to stand up and this, “By any means necessary” in the words of the famous Malcolm X.

Transcend what is dance, their differences in a common language combining the strength of Hip Hop and the sensuality of Samba, this is the “Challenge” of this original duo.
