The Wonderful Sculptures of a Cultural Icon

The Cultural Icon Series, presented by the Cultural Development Foundation in collaboration with the Folk Research Centre and Events Company of Saint Lucia Inc, will take the form of an art exhibition this year.

The Cultural Icon Series is a production conceptualized with the main aim of paying tribute to the visual artists, actors, dancers, writers, musicians and folk artists who wrote about, painted, composed and created a large part of the Saint Lucian identity.

The Cultural Icons Series is a deliberate effort by the Cultural Development Foundation (CDF) to build a strong, united and proud Saint Lucian community empowered by culture and creativity. Into its fifth year, the Cultural Icon Series, will honour the work of Sculptor giant, Vincent Joseph Eudovic.

Mr. Eudovic’s diversity in terms of the respective stories and of the media that he works in (wood sculpture), will make the Cultural Icon Series exhibit a reference as regards artistic production by our communities of the wood and sculpture diversity.

As the Foundation prepared to host the fifth edition of The Cultural Icon Series, the Culture Crew; a group of budding arts and cultural enthusiasts, embarked on an educational drive by sharing snippets of information on the Cultural Icon with students around the island.

The 20 – minute presentation included music, song, narrative and dance, documenting the life of Vincent Joseph Eudovic and his contribution to the arts. The schedule included the following schools:

  • Wednesday 25th September – Forrestierre Methodist School, Odsan Primary School, Bexon Primary School
  • Friday 27th September – Boguis Combined, Desbarras Combined, Entrepot Secondary
  • Thursday 3rd October – St Joseph Convent, Dame Pearlette Louisy Primary School, Corinth Secondary
  • Friday 4th October – Bouton Primary and Soufriere Primary Schools

The Cultural Icon Series forms part of Creole Heritage Month.  In previous years, icons that have been recognised include: Hon. Charles Cadet (2015), Virginia Alexander (2016), Garth St. Omer (2017) and Rameau Poleon (2018). This year’s showcase, Vincent J. Eudovic; Sculpture Art Exhibition –will be open to all from Friday 25th to Tuesday 29 October on the 2nd Floor of the BayWalk Mall from 9:00 am- 6:00pm daily, except Sunday.

Vincent Joseph Eudovic

Wood carver Vincent Eudovic was born in Saint Lucia’s rural community of Babonneau in 1942. He began carving at a very early age and won his first exhibition contest at age 12; it was from this time Eudovic knew what his life’s work would be. Upon completing his public schooling he departed to Trinidad to continue his studies and carving. After a very successful 10 years in Trinidad Eudovic returned to Saint Lucia to teach art. Still wishing to improve his craft, he then applied for a United Nations scholarship and ventured off to Nigeria, Africa, where his studies brought, in his view, maturity to his art form. Eudovic then returned to Saint Lucia and resumed teaching but after a few years left to concentrate on his art work as well as to open his own gallery and workshop in Goodlands, Castries, which is still in operation today.

Eudovic has participated in many competitions over the years, including the Caribbean’s first wood carving exhibition held in Guadeloupe in 1975, where he won the Golden Medal Award for best Caribbean Wood Sculptor. He has held exhibitions and has work displayed in nearly every island in the region as well as in Europe and has work in museums and private collections worldwide.
